Aronia melanocarpa, commonly known as black chokeberry, is a hardy, deciduous shrub native to North America widely recognized for its ornamental value and antioxidant-rich, edible (though astringent) berries. The plant is a versatile addition to landscapes due to its seasonal interest and adaptability

Size and Growth Habit: The shrub typically grows 3 to 6 feet tall and wide, with an upright, spreading, multi-stemmed growth habit. It spreads by root suckers and can form colonies or a dense hedgerow.

  • Foliage and Flowers: It features glossy, dark green leaves that transform into brilliant shades of red, orange, and purple in the fall. Clusters of small, white flowers with deep red anthers appear in late spring.
  • Fruit: The plant produces clusters of small, deep purple-black pome fruits in late summer or early fall. These berries are edible but notably tart and astringent (mouth-drying) when eaten raw due to their high tannin content, which gives them the "chokeberry" name.
  • Hardiness: Aronia melanocarpa is very cold-hardy, thriving in USDA Hardiness Zones 3-8.

Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours Stratification : cold stratify for 90 -120 days Germination: sow seed 1/16" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed
