Asimina triloba, commonly known as the pawpaw, is a small deciduous tree native to the eastern United States and southern Ontario, Canada. It is the only temperate-dwelling member of the otherwise tropical "custard apple" family (Annonaceae)

• Fruit: Produces the largest edible fruit native to North America. The fruit is a greenish-yellow berry with a creamy, custard-like texture and a flavor often described as a blend of banana, mango, and pineapple.
• Foliage: Large, drooping, tropical-looking leaves that can reach 12 inches in length. They turn a vibrant yellow in autumn.
• Flowers: Features distinctive maroon, bell-shaped flowers that appear in early spring. These flowers produce a faint fetid odor to attract pollinators like flies and beetles.
• Growth Habit: Typically grows 15 to 30 feet tall. It often forms clonal patches or thickets through root suckers.

• Habitat: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soils, often found in forest understories and along stream banks.
• Pollination: Pawpaws are generally self-incompatible; two genetically different trees are required in close proximity for successful fruit production.
• Wildlife Support: It is the exclusive host plant for the larvae of the Zebra Swallowtail butterfly. While wildlife like raccoons and opossums relish the fruit, the leaves and bark contain natural insecticides (acetogenins) that make them highly deer-resistant.
• Hardiness: Suitable for USDA zones 5 through 9.
• Edibility: Only the ripe fruit pulp should be consumed. The skin and large black seeds are toxic and should be removed.
