Humulus lupulus, commonly known as hops, is a perennial climbing vine in the hemp family (Cannabaceae) native to the Northern Hemisphere. It is globally renowned for its female flowers, called strobiles or "cones," which are essential to the brewing industry for providing bitterness, aroma, and preservative qualities to beer.

  • Growth Habit: A vigorous, herbaceous vine (technically a "bine") that can grow 15 to 30 feet in a single season by twining around supports.
  • Dioecious Nature: Plants are either male or female; only the female plants produce the resinous cones used in brewing.
  • Botanical Meaning: The name derives from the Latin humus (earth), referring to its tendency to sprawl if unsupported, and lupulus (small wolf), an ancient name for the plant.
  • Brewing: The lupulin glands inside the female cones contain alpha-acids and essential oils that stabilize and flavor beer.
  • Medicinal: Historically used as a sedative and sleep aid to treat insomnia and anxiety. It is often found in herbal extracts and teas, sometimes combined with valerian or passionflower.
  • Culinary: Young hop shoots, sometimes called "hop asparagus," are edible and considered a gourmet vegetable when harvested in early spring.
  • Ornamental: Due to its rapid growth and lush green foliage, it is frequently used to cover trellises, arbors, and fences for shade or privacy.
  • Growing Conditions: Thrives in full sun and well-drained, rich soil (USDA zones 3–8).
