Nepeta cataria is the scientific name for the perennial herb commonly known as catnip . It is most famous for containing the compound nepetalactone, which produces a euphoric response in many felines, and is also used in traditional herbal medicine for humans.

Nepeta cataria is a vigorous, but short-lived, herbaceous perennial that is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae).

  • Physical Characteristics: The plant typically grows in a spreading clump to 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) tall, with erect, branched, square, grayish stems. The leaves are opposite, triangular to heart-shaped, and covered with fine, downy hairs, especially on the underside, giving them a gray-green appearance.
  • Flowers: It produces small, white to pale lavender flowers with purple spots, which bloom in spike-like terminal clusters from late spring well into summer.
  • Habitat: Native to southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia, it has widely naturalized across North America and other temperate regions. It is often found in disturbed soils, such as roadsides, fields, and waste areas.
