Caragana arborescens, commonly known as the Siberian peashrub or Siberian pea tree, is a cold-hardy, drought-tolerant, deciduous shrub or small tree native to Siberia and Manchuria . It is widely used in landscaping for windbreaks, erosion control, and wildlife habitat due to its adaptability to poor soil conditions and ability to fix nitrogen in the soil.

  • Size: A large, multi-stemmed shrub that typically grows to a height of 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 meters) and a spread of 12 to 15 feet, though it can be trained as a small tree (a "standard").
  • Foliage: Features bright green, pinnately compound leaves, each with 4 to 6 pairs of small leaflets that turn yellow in the fall.
  • Flowers: Produces small, pea-like, bright yellow flowers in late spring to early summer, which are attractive to pollinators.
  • Fruit: The flowers give way to yellowish-green pods that mature to brown in the summer and contain several seeds.
  • Hardiness: Extremely cold-hardy, suitable for USDA zones 2 to 7.
  • Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
  • Soil: Highly adaptable and tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, including poor, dry, alkaline, and even salty soils. It cannot tolerate standing water or overly wet soils.
  • Watering: Requires regular watering during the establishment period; once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal water.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance. Pruning can be done in late winter or early spring to maintain a desired shape, or severely in late summer to control size.
  • Ecological Role: As a legume, it fixes nitrogen in the soil, which benefits nearby plants and makes it a beneficial plant for permaculture and soil enrichment.
  • Landscape Uses: Commonly used for hedges, screens, windbreaks, and erosion control in challenging environments due to its resilience.
  • Wildlife Value: Provides good cover for wildlife, with its flowers attracting bees and seeds serving as a food source for birds and small mammals.
  • Edibility: The young seed pods and seeds are edible for humans and can be cooked before eating, and the seeds are a food source for poultry.
  • Invasive Potential: In some Midwestern U.S. states, it is considered an invasive species as it can escape cultivation and form dense thickets, displacing native vegetation. Check local regulations before planting.
